The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja is set to hear and potentially decide on the case against Multichoice Nigeria, a major pay-TV operator, regarding the recent rate increases for its DStv and GOtv packages.
The tribunal had temporarily restrained MultiChoice from implementing the subscription rate hikes pending the hearing and resolution of a motion on notice filed by Nigerian citizen Festus Onifade through his lawyer, Ejiro Awaritoma.
Onifade’s lawsuit accuses MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd. of unjustly raising subscription fees without due consideration.
He seeks interim orders against the pay-TV provider.
In a ruling last Monday, a three-member tribunal chaired by Saratu Shafii sided with Onifade, restraining Multichoice from proceeding with the planned price increase scheduled for May 1, 2024.
The tribunal ordered all parties involved in the suit to appear before the panel on May 7, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. for the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
