Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced the imminent construction of a fully operational airport to facilitate the transportation of goods and services within the state.
The governor shared this development during a visit from the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honorable Benjamin Kalu, at his residence.
Governor Otti mentioned that preliminary discussions with both the Deputy Speaker and the Minister of Aviation have already taken place.
“An airport is in the works. I have had a discussion with him (Deputy Speaker) and with the Honourable Minister of Aviation, and we know that what differentiates an airstrip from an airport is the runway. Since the budget has made provision for an airstrip, we believe we can also make it an airport,” Governor Otti explained.
In what appeared to be a veiled critique of a previous state administration’s attempt to secure funding for a non-existent airport, Governor Otti assured that the current plans are for a tangible airport, “We’ve identified the location; very soon a team that has been put together by the Federal Government will be here. And it is the real airport not a virtual airport.” he said.
Governor Otti expressed his gratitude to the Deputy Speaker for his unwavering support, which has been crucial in securing federal projects for the state, including the airport initiative.
He also highlighted his administration’s commitment to security, mentioning the establishment of a Security Advisory Council led by General Onyeabor Ihejirika. This council is tasked with collaborating with security agencies and the government to create a robust security framework for the state’s present and future needs.
Honorable Kalu praised Governor Otti for his effective governance, stating that the people of Abia State are regaining their sense of pride and dignity thanks to his efforts.
“I came here to tell the whole world that you are doing well. I came to tell you that you are bringing out the name of Abia. We are solidly recovering our dignity, raising our shoulders because of your selfless approach to governance.
“You are living up to your pledge,”
Kalu also expressed his appreciation for the warm reception hosted by Governor Otti last December, celebrating his return to Abia after being elected Deputy Speaker.
