The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has mandated eleven electricity distribution companies to issue refunds to customers who were overcharged under the new tariff by April 11, 2024.
The directive, signed by Mr. Abba Terab of NERC, specifies that refunds should be made via energy tokens and documented evidence of compliance submitted by April 12.
To ensure transparency, the commission has instructed the distribution companies to:
- Verify that only feeders classified as Band A in the April 2024 supplementary orders are charged at the Band A rate for both prepaid and postpaid customers.
- Publicize the updated list of Band A feeders impacted by the tariff review on their official websites.
- Create an online portal by April 10, 2024, enabling customers to verify their tariff Band using their meter or account numbers.
- Process refunds for customers billed incorrectly at the new rate through energy tokens by April 11, 2024, and present proof of this action to the commission by the following day.
- The NERC will oversee the adherence to these updates and continue to offer necessary assistance to all involved parties.
