Minister Nyesom Wike of the Federal Capital Territory has declared the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ART) project nearly finished, with 97% of the construction completed.
This announcement followed his inspection from the Central Area Metro Station to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Minister Wike expressed great satisfaction with the progress, calling it a realization of a long-held dream. He also disclosed that the official inauguration of the Abuja Light Rail is scheduled for May, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s first-year celebration in office.
The President has approved a schedule for launching various projects, including the ART, during the anniversary celebrations.
“We are very happy. We are almost 97% completed. All works are ongoing to make sure that the May delivery date is a reality.
“I believe this is one of the projects Mr President would like to inaugurate, because it is very key to the development of the economy.
“For me, it is a dream comes true, and we are happy that after all said and done, the metro line will be put to use for Nigerians, come May 29,” Minister Wike remarked.
During his tour, Wike opted for a 30-minute ride on the light rail, favoring it over road transport for its ease of access to the airport.
He commended the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for their efficient work and confirmed that station renovations would be ready for the May launch.
On the subject of extending the rail service to other busy areas of Abuja, Minister Wike was prudent, stressing the importance of gradual, financially mindful expansion.
While recognizing the need to connect regions like Nyanya, he made no firm promises, leaving future decisions to ongoing discussions with the contractor.
“I am not committing anything now, because we are taking everything step by step.
“We have to first of all, consider the financial implications.
“Linking areas like Nyanya are important, no doubt about it. We will talk to the contractor to see what we can do, but for now, there is no commitment,” he explained.
Minister Wike also mentioned the FCT Administration’s plan to establish three new road transport terminals in Abuja from May to enhance safety and reliability, combat the “one chance” crime issue, and provide secure alternatives to unregulated transport options.
