Renewed Threat of Impeachment Heightens Rivers State Political Crisis. The political turmoil engulfing Rivers State escalates as the Rivers Assembly renews its threat of impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The assembly, comprising 27 lawmakers now aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC), issued a stern warning on Saturday, citing continuous breaches of constitutional provisions by the governor.
In a position paper presented during a briefing in Port Harcourt, the lawmakers condemned former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and others for their disparaging remarks against Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The legislators criticized the Secondus-led faction’s inconsistency, highlighting their previous opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Fubara during the elections, only to now pledge support to them while attacking Wike.
The lawmakers emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and the constitution, urging Governor Fubara to abide by these principles, particularly in ensuring a smooth transition between elected councils.
They also referenced a previously withdrawn impeachment notice, issued in adherence to an agreement and out of respect for the presidency, which they claim has been disregarded by the governor.
Furthermore, the assembly members accused the governor of neglecting state laws, notably the absence of an Appropriation Law in Rivers State.
They criticized the newfound support for the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” questioning the sincerity of those who previously criticized President Buhari’s administration. Despite challenges, the lawmakers reiterated their commitment to legislative responsibilities and vowed to prioritize bills beneficial to the state.
Addressing concerns about their loyalty and integrity, the lawmakers affirmed their dedication to supporting President Buhari’s government and protecting the mandate entrusted to them by the people.
They urged Nigerians to rally behind the government’s efforts for economic recovery while assuring the people of Rivers State of their unwavering commitment to promoting positive change and upholding the rule of law.
The document was signed by 27 lawmakers, including Martin Amaewhule, Dumle Mail, Jack Major, Somiari-Stewart Linda, and others, signaling a unified front in their stance against what they perceive as governance deficiencies in Rivers State.
