The Labour Party Clarifies Membership Status of NLC President, Joe Ajaero The Labour Party has explicitly stated that Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), is not affiliated with the party.
Obiorah Ifoh, spokesperson for the Labour Party, made this declaration in response to assertions made by the NLC president and purported chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, S.O.Z. Ejiofor, asserting that neither individual holds membership within the party.
Ifoh emphasized that the party’s National Working Committee, led by Julius Abure, has no knowledge of any Board of Trustees (BoT) within the party structure. He dismissed the notion of any BoT assuming leadership of the party as absurd.
This statement comes amidst the NLC’s declaration of the re-election of Abure as invalid, branding the national convention that elected him as “illegal.”
In a separate statement, Benson Upah, head of information at the NLC headquarters, stated that necessary measures were being taken to contest the perceived “illegality.”
However, Ifoh pointed out that Ejiofor relinquished his position as the inaugural national chairman of the Labour Party over two decades ago, and since then, he has neither participated in any party activities nor contributed as a member.
Furthermore, Ifoh asserted that Ejiofor is not recognized even within his local ward and has not fulfilled the basic criteria for membership, such as paying dues.
“Only individuals who adhere to the party’s regulations, including holding membership cards and fulfilling financial obligations, can partake in internal party affairs. Regrettably, both Comrades Ajaero and Ejiofor do not meet these requirements and will not be permitted to influence the party’s internal affairs,” added Ifoh.
