Despite internal disputes, the Labour Party, under the guidance of Julius Abure and the National Working Committee (NWC), is determined to carry on with its national convention.
The event is slated for Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The convention’s go-ahead comes amidst a crisis of confidence between Abure and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by Comrade Joe Ajaero, who have clashed over the party’s ownership and leadership.
In a recent interview, Acting National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh assured that the convention’s preparations are well underway, dismissing rumors of a missing delegates’ list.
He confirmed that the list is secure and has been communicated to the delegates and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which oversees the convention’s proceedings.
The convention expects participation from seven delegates from each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with elected Labour Party members from the legislative bodies and the NWC.
While the total number of delegates remains unconfirmed, an estimated 300 party members are anticipated to cast their votes at the convention.
Addressing concerns about the LP caucus dispute in the House of Representatives, Ifoh emphasized the party’s unity.
This statement comes in the wake of the NLC’s directive to its members to protest at Labour Party offices nationwide, calling for Abure’s removal as national chairman.
