A tragic incident has occurred involving a staff member of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), resulting in the loss of life due to electrocution while on duty.
Kunle Olubiyo, representing the Nigerian Consumer Protection Network, shared details of the incident with DAILY POST on Monday.
The victim, identified as Josia Jim, met his untimely demise while addressing a faulty feeder within the Garki District, where he was electrocuted after power supply was unexpectedly restored during his maintenance work.
Olubiyo highlighted the lack of proper coordination between AEDC and the Nigerian Transmission Company as a contributing factor to the incident.
He emphasized the need for effective communication tools among technical staff to prevent such tragic accidents, calling for adherence to global safety standards.
Addressing the broader issue, Olubiyo underscored the necessity for synchronization and collaboration between the Transmission Company of Nigeria and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, particularly during outages involving 33KV Feeders, to mitigate risks.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Olubiyo referenced previous incidents, including one in Ilorin, where a similar electrical accident claimed lives due to operational lapses.
As of the time of reporting, AEDC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
