Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia Issues Strong Caution to Local Government Chairmen Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has issued a stern warning to local government chairmen in the state, urging them to steer clear of financial misappropriation.
Speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop on ‘Responsive Local Government Leadership for Effective Local Government Administration in Benue State,’ Governor Alia emphasized that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is closely monitoring their activities.
In his address on Monday, Governor Alia stressed the importance of responsible governance and urged chairmen not to misuse internally generated revenue or taxes for personal gain.
Instead, he urged them to focus on increasing revenue generation to enhance the welfare of citizens.
Highlighting the social contract between local government leaders and the people, Governor Alia emphasized the need for chairmen to prioritize the interests of the community and be responsive to their needs.
“Your duty is to embark on human development and ensure that the system is working for the people,” Governor Alia asserted.
“Be vigilant and aware that the EFCC is watching closely. Target the objectives of our administration to fulfill our social contract with the people and ensure the benefits of democracy.
“Governor Alia urged chairmen to address challenges and provide solutions, emphasizing the strategic role of local governments in the state’s administrative processes.
He called on them to remain dedicated to their responsibilities, refrain from unnecessary travel, and focus on making a positive impact in their respective local government areas.
“Take your duties seriously, be present, and engage with the community,” Governor Alia urged.
“Your actions should not only involve tax collection but should also have a tangible impact on the lives of citizens.
Strive to transform your local government areas and uphold good governance principles. Maintain accurate records and leave a legacy of comfort and progress for the people.”
