In response to security concerns and environmental issues, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has ordered a halt to all mining operations.
This suspension will remain in effect until a comprehensive database of miners is established.
During a meeting with the local Miners Association in Makurdi, Governor Alia tasked the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) with the immediate commencement of data collection for all mining entities.
The governor’s decision, particularly influenced by the adverse impact on water sources in regions like Kwande, underscores the administration’s commitment to safeguarding public health and bolstering internal revenue through regulated mining practices.
Governor Alia urged law enforcement and the task force against illegal mining to rigorously enforce this directive, emphasizing the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards unlawful activities and its dedication to protecting citizens’ welfare and property.
