President Bola Tinubu has instituted a temporary ban on publicly funded foreign trips for ministers, agency heads, and other government officials, effective from April 1, 2024, lasting initially for three months.
The directive, as reported by Punch, was conveyed in a letter dated March 12, 2024, signed by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The letter outlines the rationale behind the ban, citing concerns over escalating travel expenses incurred by government entities and the imperative for cabinet members and agency heads to prioritize their core responsibilities for efficient service delivery.
Tinubu emphasized the necessity for responsible fiscal management amidst prevailing economic challenges, stating, “All government officials planning public funded international trips must secure Presidential approval at least two weeks prior to departure, deemed essential.
“This measure is intended to curtail governance costs while ensuring that official travel aligns with crucial government functions.
