Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a two-time candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, has declared his withdrawal from the upcoming 2024 governorship election.
Jegede, who contested as the PDP candidate in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, expressed his commitment to making necessary sacrifices to address the party’s challenges instead of exacerbating them.
Addressing his supporters across Ondo’s 18 local government areas in Akure, the state capital, the PDP leader emphasized his dedication to securing the party’s victory in the election.
He stated, “After extensive consultations and reconsiderations, it became evident that we need to reevaluate whether to continue or take a different path that aligns with the majority opinion regarding equitable representation, fairness, and justice, especially in the gubernatorial context.
“Jegede highlighted the absence of zoning in the party’s constitution and emphasized the importance of merit in gubernatorial elections.
He acknowledged the presence of competent governorship aspirants within the party and expressed his support for them in the primary elections.
“I believe it’s time to give these individuals the opportunity to contest in the primary and, God willing, emerge victorious in the governorship election. I will provide them with all the support available to me,” he concluded.
