The Brazilian high court has affirmed that Robinho, the ex-Manchester City footballer, is to serve a nine-year sentence in Brazil. This follows his conviction for a sexual assault incident that occurred in Italy in 2013.
Robinho, along with five others, was convicted of raping a woman in a Milan nightclub. Despite his denial of the charges and losing two appeals, the 40-year-old’s conviction stands.
Initially, it seemed Robinho might avoid incarceration due to Brazil’s policy against extraditing its nationals.
However, the Superior Court of Justice in Brazil, with a 9-2 vote, upheld the Italian court’s ruling, mandating that he serve his sentence in Brazil.
Robinho retains the option to challenge this latest ruling in Brazil’s Supreme Court.
