The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has refuted claims of a security compromise within its database, following disruptions to banking and telecommunications services in Nigeria due to an undersea cable fault.
NIMC spokesperson, Mr. Kayode Adegoke, clarified the situation in Abuja, affirming the security and integrity of the database.
This statement comes after certain media outlets reported a potential data breach by a private entity, XpressVerify.
“We express gratitude to media partners and the whistleblowers for bringing this to our attention.
”And wish to assure Nigerians and legal residents that there is no data breach of any sort and the Citizens’ data is safe and secure in the Nigeria’s National identity database, “ the commission declared.
NIMC’s Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has initiated a thorough investigation to ascertain whether any tokenization verification agents have violated their licensing terms, either directly or indirectly.
“Rest assured, we have robust security measures in place to protect the National Identification Number (NIN) and the personal details of all citizens and legal residents,” she stated.
The commission reiterates its commitment to the secure and responsible handling of the nation’s identity data, recognizing the essential role of public trust and confidence in its operations. NIMC continues to maintain the highest levels of integrity and accountability in its stewardship of this data.
