The city of Ibadan is poised for the ascension of a new ruler, Chief Owolabi Olakulehin, following the recent passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Olalekan Balogun.
The high chiefs and locals have made their choice clear, gathering at the Alalubosa residence of the Olubadan-designate to honor him.
Chief Olakulehin, who hails from the military line, is set to continue the tradition of alternating the Olubadan title between the civil and military lines. The late Oba Balogun was from the civil line.
Prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu and various state governors, paid their respects to Oba Balogun, who was interred at his family compound in Ali Iwo following Islamic customs.
The Olubadan-in-Council, including notable members such as Senator Rashidi Ladoja and Oba Hamidu Ajibade, convened to acknowledge the Olubadan-designate.
Senator Ladoja affirmed that the succession process in Ibadan is well-established, with Chief Olakulehin poised to ascend from the Balogun line.
The city is currently in a state of mourning and celebration, with the late monarch’s residence in Alarere receiving a steady stream of sympathizers.
The late Oba’s wife, Olori Funmilayo, along with other family members, welcomed visitors who shared fond memories of the departed ruler.
Chief Olakulehin’s path to the throne began in 1983, and his crowning as the 43rd Olubadan awaits Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval. The community eagerly anticipates the announcement of the coronation date, which will follow the completion of the late Oba’s burial rites.
The legacy of the late Oba Balogun, remembered for his commendable stewardship of Ibadan, lives on as the city prepares to welcome its new monarch.
