Funsho Adeolu, a prominent figure in Nollywood, has voiced his disapproval of actors venturing into politics, labeling it as “dishonourable.” His remarks were made during an appearance on the King of Talk podcast with Teju Babyface.
In his conversation with Teju Babyface, Adeolu indirectly addressed some of his colleagues, expressing his belief that actors should refrain from political involvement due to the perceived unethical conduct of politicians.
While he asserted his stance, Adeolu did not provide substantial evidence to support his claims.
According to Adeolu, actors who engage in politics often resort to questionable tactics to gain recognition, such as prioritizing social media popularity, flaunting material possessions, and attending lavish parties.
“Trying to be known by force. Like doing everything to make sure that they build their Instagram followers. By buying big cars, and going to parties. By doing things that are not honourable and they are supposed to be role models,” he said.
When pressed by Teju Babyface to elaborate on his notion of “dishonourable things,”
Adeolu said, “Like I am an actor now, I should not be seen fighting outside. I should not be seen answering everybody insulting me on social media.
“I should not be caught doing criminal things. I should not be seen talking nonsense on Instagram. I should not be seen doing politics. I do not want to say so many things because a lot of people will pick on it and say he is talking to me.”
Adeolu further clarified that he has never participated in political campaigns despite lucrative offers, as he values the trust and admiration of his fans.
He believes that maintaining his integrity is paramount, and engaging in politics could jeopardize his relationship with his supporters.
In recent years, several Nollywood actors have ventured into politics, seeking various political positions.
Funke Akindele ran for the position of deputy governor in Lagos state, while Femi Branch contested the gubernatorial seat in Ogun state.
Olumide Oworu also participated in political activities, standing for election against Desmond Elliot for the Surulere constituency in the Lagos state house of assembly during the 2023 elections.
