Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, along with former Zamfara State governor Abdullaziz Yari and Senator Abdul Ningi, is spearheading the establishment of a major political party in anticipation of the 2027 general election.
Atiku, who contested as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023 but lost to President Bola Tinubu, has initiated efforts to form this new political entity, collaborating with certain members of the National Assembly.
The decision to form the mega party stems from concerns within Atiku’s camp regarding disunity within the PDP and the perceived overbearing influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in the opposition party.
Drawing inspiration from the successful merger of various parties in 2013, which led to the formation of a major political force, Atiku and his allies are working towards a similar coalition to challenge Tinubu’s dominance.
However, some senators allege that there is a separate agenda to destabilize Tinubu’s government in a bid to shift power back to the north in 2027.
They emphasize their vigilance in thwarting any attempts to create discord between the legislature and the executive, emphasizing their commitment to constructive opposition despite the circumstances.
