Edo North Senatorial District Residents Protest Against Deputy Governor’s ImpeachmentResidents and indigenes of Edo North Senatorial District have voiced their discontent over the impending impeachment of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
The rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin emerged in 2023, stemming from Shaibu’s aspiration to contest for the governorship of Edo State.
During the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election in February, Shaibu conducted a parallel poll at his residence, where he was declared the winner. Meanwhile, Asue Ighodalo emerged as the victor in the main PDP primary election in Edo State.
Recently, the Edo State House of Assembly served Shaibu with an impeachment notice, sparking outrage among residents.
Protesters, chanting solidarity songs, called on Governor Obaseki to prioritize peace.
Placards bore messages such as “No to the impeachment of Edo’s deputy governor,” “Peace through understanding, not force,” and “Choose peace over impeachment.
“The demonstrators, representing various demographics including women, men, and youths under the Edo North PDP Rescue Movement (ENREM), gathered at the Jattu junction in Etsako West Local Government before marching through the communities’ major streets.
Festus Owu, the protest’s leader, urged lawmakers to focus on enacting beneficial legislation instead of pursuing futile impeachment efforts that offer no relief to citizens in need.
They appealed to Governor Obaseki to intervene and halt any impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor.
