Bayer Leverkusen moved closer to securing their first-ever Bundesliga championship with a 2-0 victory over a 10-man Wolfsburg team.
Despite Bayern Munich narrowing the lead to seven points with an 8-1 triumph against Mainz, Leverkusen’s win, with nine matches left, has put them 10 points clear at the top, maintaining their unbeaten record across all competitions this season.
Granit Xhaka of Leverkusen acknowledged the match’s difficulty but emphasized the importance of the win, stating, “The fans might have wanted more goals, but the win is what counts.”
The game’s dynamics shifted when Wolfsburg’s Moritz Jenz received his second yellow card, reducing his team to 10 players. This marked the third consecutive match Leverkusen’s opponents were reduced in number, a testament to the intense style of play under coach Xabi Alonso.
After a challenging Europa League match in Azerbaijan against Qarabag, which ended in a 2-2 draw, Leverkusen made eight roster changes. Notably, Jeremie Frimpong was absent due to suspension.
Leverkusen’s scoring began with Nathan Tella’s header from an Alex Grimaldo assist, followed by Florian Wirtz’s late goal, sealing the win and edging the team closer to the title.
