SSANU and NASU Plan 7-Day Warning Strike Over Unpaid Salaries. The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has authorized a seven-day warning strike set to commence on March 18.
This action comes in response to the federal government’s failure to pay members four months’ worth of withheld salaries.
The strike, pending ratification by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to compensate workers in public universities who were not paid during the 2022 strike.
Despite the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation disbursing funds to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the non-teaching staff unions remain unpaid.
At the 47th NEC meeting held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, members of SSANU unanimously voted for the warning strike, which may escalate to an indefinite strike if the government fails to act.
SSANU President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim emphasized the union’s resolve to demand justice, stating that the strike will disrupt campus activities nationwide.
He expressed hope for a resolution but warned of a total blackout if salaries are not disbursed.Should the government persist in its inaction, SSANU and NASU plan to escalate their protest measures.
However, Ibrahim stressed that the unions had diligently followed due process and exhausted all avenues for dialogue before resorting to strike action.
