The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) has condemned the recent wave of violence and killings perpetrated by suspected Fulani herders in communities across Benue State.
In the wake of the brutal attacks, which claimed the lives of over 50 individuals in Ukum Local Government Area and 16 others in Wandor, Mbaikyor community of Gwer East LGA, the coalition expressed deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis.
The assailants also left a trail of destruction, torching over 50 houses and displacing numerous residents.
In a statement released by its President General, Goodluck Ibem, CONYL decried the wanton destruction of farmlands and food supplies at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with hunger and deprivation.
Ibem emphasized that the current wave of hardship and starvation plaguing the nation can be directly attributed to the relentless attacks on Benue State, often referred to as the “food basket” of Nigeria.
Highlighting the critical importance of safeguarding food sources from external threats, Ibem stressed that food security is indispensable for the survival of any nation.
The coalition called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deploy all available military resources to combat the terrorists responsible for the atrocities, emphasizing the urgent need to avert further suffering and prevent the looming specter of famine.
