The attempt to impeach Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, sparked public outcry as a multitude of citizens, including women, men, and youths, demonstrated against the move.
Gathering under the banners of the Peace Movement and PDP Faithful, the crowd assembled in Auchi, Etsako West local government area, voicing their opposition to the Assembly’s impeachment process.
Armed with signs proclaiming “No to impeachment,” “We want peace in Edo State,” and other slogans supporting Shaibu, the demonstrators made their stance clear.
Representatives of the protesters, including Mr. Aminu Umosor, Gafata Emmanuel, and Hajia Anetu Momodu, threatened to rally the state’s populace and the PDP against the party should the impeachment proceed. They urged Governor Obaseki and the Assembly to engage in genuine dialogue rather than pursue impeachment.
The group called on the legislators to abandon the impeachment efforts to maintain peace in the state, with Emmanuel cautioning that protests would persist until a peaceful resolution is reached.
Musa Ebomhiana, the deputy governor’s press secretary, indicated that there are ongoing efforts to amicably settle the dispute, emphasizing the PDP’s commitment to resolving the issue within the party’s broad framework.
