Lagos authorities are set to implement the indoor smoking law in nightlife venues, including nightclubs, bars, and lounges, to foster a safer environment.
The Lagos Safety Commission and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) announced the enforcement plans at a workshop aimed at instilling a safety culture within the sector.
The Director General of the Safety Commission emphasized the importance of adhering to international smoking regulations and the need for designated smoking areas in hotels, away from general relaxation spots.
He also highlighted the current challenges in the hospitality industry, such as inconsistent service quality and inadequate training, which can be addressed through vigilant monitoring and safety measures.
The enforcement of the indoor smoking law is a priority for the Lagos State government, with strict penalties for non-compliance.
This move is supported by LASEPA’s General Manager, who noted that despite some businesses not following safety rules, the situation is being rectified with the imposition of severe sanctions.
Industry experts, including an Occupational Health and Safety Manager and a Hospitality Consultant, concurred that improving service quality requires investment in staff training and adherence to global standards.
They also recommended that nightclubs install clear exit signs to prevent stampedes and ensure safe evacuation during emergencies.
