“Violent Conflict Claims 45 Lives in Benue State Community.A deadly clash between rival militia factions erupted in the Gbagir community of Ukum Local Government Area, Benue State, resulting in the tragic loss of 45 lives, including seven members of a single family.
The confrontation, which occurred on Tuesday, involved two opposing groups known as “Full Fire” and “Chain.”While the majority of casualties were suspected militia members vying for dominance, at least 12 innocent farmers were also caught in the crossfire.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing ordeal, highlighting the fear it instilled among rural residents who witnessed the brutality firsthand. The conflict reportedly stemmed from the abduction of Alhaji Gana, a militia leader from Taraba State, and his family by a Benue militia leader.
Despite a demand for a ₦100 million ransom, only ₦5 million was paid, leading to the tragic demise of the hostages and sparking outrage among the Taraba militia. In retaliation, a militia leader in Ukum collaborated with the Taraba faction to confront their rivals in Gbagir.
The ensuing clash resulted in the loss of over 45 lives, primarily militia members, with a dozen farmers among the casualties.Over 30 individuals sustained injuries, and some remain unaccounted for.
Tragically, the Adzandeh family, comprising seven members from Tse Adzandeh Mbasaa, Mbajiga, Ityuluv, Torov, were among those who perished.Although armed groups extended their presence to other areas, timely intervention by Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) troops prevented their incursion into residential zones.
While a military source confirmed the clash and the recovery of several bodies, State Police Commissioner Emmanuel Adesina officially documented five casualties.”
