Suspected herdsmen reportedly carried out a deadly attack on Tuesday in several communities within Ukum Local Government Area of Benue North senatorial zone, leaving at least 10 people dead, according to initial reports.
However, residents claim the death toll could be higher, possibly exceeding 30.Among the victims were members of a family of seven, identified as Michael Mtindiga Adzandeh, Iorfa Michael Mtindiga Adzandeh, Akighirga Adzandeh, Tyowuese Adzandeh, Tersee Swende Adzandeh, Terngu Tortiv Adzandeh, and Terkaa Shiati Adzandeh.
An eyewitness, Tersoo Iorbee, recounted receiving information about an impending attack by suspected herdsmen. Shortly afterward, masked gunmen invaded the Adzandeh settlement, indiscriminately shooting at residents. By the end of the assault, 10 individuals, including the entire Adzandeh family, were confirmed dead.
Survivor Msugh Aga, who narrowly escaped the attack and sought refuge elsewhere, described the assailants’ brutality, stating that they not only shot people but also used long knives to butcher them and set numerous houses ablaze.
Victor Iorzaa, the caretaker Chairman of Ukum Local Government Area, acknowledged the incident and has instructed the Divisional Police Officer of Ukum to reinforce security in the affected area to prevent further bloodshed.
Ukum Local Government Area, bordering Wukari Local Government Area in Taraba State, has been a target of repeated attacks by suspected herdsmen.
However, the Benue Police Command has yet to receive an official report on this latest assault.
