The Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), acting on behalf of the Enugu State Government, has enforced the closure of local branches of ShopRite and SPAR due to their non-compliance with tax remittance regulations.
Nnamdi Eneh, the ESIRS spokesperson, stated that despite multiple warnings, these establishments have consistently failed to submit the required purchase taxes to the state. The enforcement action took place on Tuesday morning.
In addition to ShopRite and SPAR, ESIRS officials also sealed Roban Stores and Mama Onyinye restaurant, among others, for similar violations.
Perpetual Egwuonwu, ESIRS Head of Department for eateries, bars, hotels, and shopping malls, expressed that despite numerous visits and pleas to these businesses to fulfill their tax obligations, their efforts have been met with resistance.
While Roban Store has since complied and displayed the ESIRS sticker, ShopRite has not been cooperative.
Egwuonwu emphasized that the sealed establishments would remain closed until they resolve the tax issues.
Eneh further mentioned that ESIRS has been actively engaging in public enlightenment campaigns to educate citizens on the importance of tax compliance to avoid such enforcement actions.
Despite these efforts, many have not heeded the call, leading to the current measures to enforce compliance.
