Over the weekend, suspected bandits unleashed a wave of violence in Kwande and Apa Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State, resulting in multiple casualties, including a soldier.
The attacks occurred in various communities, including Udedeku in Kwande and Ochumekwu in Apa, between Saturday and Sunday.
Reports indicate that several individuals lost their lives in the Udedeku community, with some locals still missing.
Confirming the incidents, Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operations Whirl Stroke, revealed that suspected armed bandits targeted soldiers deployed in Ochumekwu, Apa LGA.
The attack claimed the life of one soldier and left another injured. In retaliation, the troops neutralized three assailants and recovered an AK-47 rifle along with ammunition.
Regarding the assault in Kwande, the OPWS Commander stated that troops were conducting a clearance operation to eradicate suspected armed foreign bandits from the area.
While the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, acknowledged reports of a forest invasion in Kwande, she noted that no official reports of fatalities had been received at the time of her statement.
