Former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, has taken legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by filing a lawsuit in the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking N1 billion in damages after being declared wanted for alleged involvement in fraud.
Agunloye, who served during the administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has also named the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) as the second defendant in the case.
Scheduled for April 18, the case is currently before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
In his lawsuit, the former minister seeks six reliefs, including a declaration that the EFCC acted unlawfully by declaring him wanted on its official website or any other platform without adhering to constitutional safeguards and judicial intervention.
He also requests an order for the removal of his picture, name, and other details from the EFCC’s wanted list.Additionally, Agunloye seeks a perpetual injunction restraining both the EFCC and the AGF from further declaring him wanted, except through judicial intervention and adherence to constitutional safeguards.
He further demands one billion naira in general damages against the defendants, particularly the EFCC, as well as the costs of the legal action.
Previously, Agunloye spent time in Kuje prison after being arraigned on seven counts related to fraudulent award of contracts and official corruption. In January, the court granted him bail in the sum of N50 million.
