The Central Bank has been sending notifications through Nigerian banks, asking customers to link their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN).
However, many customers have been voicing their worries about the stress and hassle of completing the linkage in a hurry, as the hashtag #NIN/BVN trends on X.
Some customers think this is an unnecessary process because they already provided their documents when they opened their accounts, but Nairametrics found out that many of them may have linked their BVN but not their NIN, as required by the new directive.
The CBN’s directive states that tier 2 and 3 accounts and wallets must be linked with both BVN and NIN, while tier 1 accounts can choose to link with either BVN or NIN.
Bank sources say that some customers who linked their BVN have errors in their details and will have to correct them to avoid possible account blocks.
In spite of the difficulties, many bank customers are expressing their displeasure and urging the CBN to introduce self-service options to allow customers to do this process without joining long queues at the bank..
