The Benue State Police Command has taken action to seal the All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat in Makurdi, the capital city. Additionally, they intervened to prevent the scheduled meeting of the Mr. Austin Agada-led Executives on Friday, March 1 and 3, 2024.
According to reports, the meeting was organized by the APC executives, alongside selected stakeholders and the recently appointed Executive Director of Housing, Finance, and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Dr. Matthias Byuan, in Makurdi. However, the State Police Command, through a letter signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Samuel Gimba, acting on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, advised Mr. Agada to call off the meetings.
The Command cited an earlier communication it had received from Governor Hyacinth Alia, which imposed a moratorium on all political meetings and gatherings in the state.
Governor Alia, through his Chief of Staff, Paul Biam, issued a letter dated February 27, 2024, imposing the ban due to the precarious security situation in the state.
The letter stated: “I write to inform you that His Excellency Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alla has banned all political gatherings in any form, be it inter or intra-party or groups in Benue State until further notice.
“This has become necessary following intelligence on the volatility of the security atmosphere in the state.
“It is certainly not news to you how the security atmosphere in the state has charged following the unprecedented influx of armed herdsmen in the state. You are by this notification invited to enforce this directive.”
