The Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed frustration over the ongoing refusal to inaugurate the 16 party members affirmed by the Court of Appeal as duly elected representatives of the State Assembly.
The development stems from the recent dismissal by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, of an application filed by the ousted 16 members of the People Democratic Party (PDP) seeking a review of the judgment that nullified their seats following the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding Governor Caleb Muftwang’s election victory.
In addition to rejecting the review application, the Court imposed a hefty fine of N8 million on each of the 16 APC members involved in the legal challenge.Hon. Rufus Bature, the State Chairman of the APC, expressed dismay at the prolonged delay, condemning it as a blatant disregard for the judiciary and constituted authorities.
Bature urged the Speaker of the House to promptly swear in the 16 APC lawmakers, warning that any further procrastination could compel the party to pursue legal recourse to ensure compliance.
“While we cannot compel the speaker to act, we expect him to fulfill his obligations without further delay. If necessary, we will explore legal avenues to address this matter. Despite the Speaker’s reluctance, we remain cautious not to exacerbate the situation given the state’s security concerns,” Bature stated.
Should the Speaker, Hon. Gabriel Dewan, persist in his refusal, the APC indicated it would pursue legal action to compel compliance, potentially charging him with contempt of court.
“The Speaker must adhere to the court’s directive and swear in the 16 members promptly. Any further delay will be deemed contemptuous.
We believe the Speaker is influenced externally, but he must recognize the repercussions of his actions.
As a young politician, he should not tarnish his reputation,” Bature advised.
