The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, the youth arm of the foremost Igbo cultural group, has warned the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, not to stage any protest in Igbo land. The NLC had planned to hold nationwide protests on February 27 and 28 to express their grievances over the country’s economic woes.
But the statement issued on Monday by the National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, said the NLC protest would be resisted in Igbo land. Okwu, who said Ndigbo had endured many injustices in Nigeria, complained that no other region had ever supported them.
He said, “under the administration of former president Muhammadu Buhari, Ndigbo were treated as trash, but no other region spoke up for us. “It was so bad that there was no Igbo man in Buhari’s security council for eight years, but the whole country acted as if nothing was wrong.
“Even under the current government, the South-East has the fewest ministers, and nobody has ever questioned it. “Ndigbo also faced a lot of abuse and violence during the last elections because of their political choices; but no one stood up for them.
“Why then would anyone want to involve Ndigbo in any protest for any reason. We say a big ‘No’ to it and advise those behind it to back off. “Bola Ahmed Tinubu is our president whom we are happy with and we will continue to back him,” Okwu stated.
He, however, made three requests to President Tinubu, which were the release of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, an extra state for the South-East and an additional ministerial slot. “These are the issues that matter to Ndigbo and not any irrelevant protest,” the Ohanaeze youths president said.
