The Nigeria Police Force has taken action by sealing off the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) office in Lagos State, ahead of the scheduled nationwide protest against hunger and economic hardship.
The protest, slated for February 27 and 28, aimed to address the prevalent economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
In a photo shared by activist Hassan Taiwo, armed police personnel were seen stationed in front of the NLC headquarters in the Yaba area of Lagos State, leaving a few individuals uncertain about their situation.
The NLC had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Nigerian government concerning the widespread hardship, leading to the organization of the protest.
Despite government warnings and appeals from various quarters, the NLC maintained its stance to proceed with the protest, accusing the government of planning to disrupt peaceful rallies and alleging the involvement of certain groups in inciting violence against protestors.
In response, the NLC President emphasized the right to peaceful protest and cautioned against suppressing dissent or resorting to violence against peaceful demonstrators.
The statement also highlighted concerns about potential state-sponsored aggression and reiterated the NLC’s resolve to carry out the protest as planned.
