ECOWAS Lifts Sanctions After Summit in Abuja Following an extraordinary summit addressing political and security concerns in the region, ECOWAS has lifted sanctions imposed on Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
This decision aligns with calls from Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, to lift sanctions and urge the countries to remain in ECOWAS.
In response to the coup in Niger last August, Nigeria halted electricity supply to the country, impacting its citizens. Pressure mounted, including from Northern Senators Forum, urging President Bola Tinubu, ECOWAS Chairman, to restore electricity.President Tinubu, advocating for dialogue, called for the suspension of economic sanctions, emphasizing regional ideals of security, democratic governance, and prosperity.
ECOWAS stressed inclusive dialogue involving various stakeholders for regional unity and security.
The summit highlighted the need to activate the standby force for counterterrorism, including financing and equipping efforts. ECOWAS praised President Macky Sall’s leadership in Senegal and urged stakeholders to prioritize dialogue for transparent elections and democratic progress.
