A member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Talata Mafara constituency, Shamsudeen Bosko, clarified that Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki has not been impeached but is presently suspended.
In an exclusive telephone interview with TVC News, Mr. Bosko explained that according to the House standing rules, they have the authority to appoint a speaker Pro-Tempo to oversee proceedings in the Speaker’s absence during the ongoing crisis.
Additionally, Bosko stated that the eighteen members have closed down the Assembly, holding onto the mace.
He further mentioned that Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki could resume his duties if the crisis is resolved or if he is not impeached, as the majority of twenty-four lawmakers have not supported his removal.
Hon. Shamsudeen also clarified the misconceptions surrounding Speaker Moriki’s status, emphasizing that he remains suspended until the resolution of the crisis in their next session.
Reports indicate that Bashar Gummi, representing Gummi Constituency, was elected as the Speaker pro-tempo.
The motion for the Speaker’s removal may be linked to recent concerns raised by a member representing Maru constituency, Hon.
Nasiru Abdullahi, regarding the resurgence of insecurity in the state.
Sources suggest that the Speaker’s ousting is a response to the escalating insecurity, with bandits reemerging in communities and highways across Zamfara State.
Shamsudeen Bosko, a two-term member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly and one of the few APC lawmakers, holds considerable influence and is known for his activism.
Recall that the Zamfara State House of Assembly was surrounded by heavily armed security operatives on Thursday evening in response to the threat of impeachment by eighteen members against Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki.
The Zamfara State House of Assembly comprises twenty-four elected members representing the fourteen Local Government Councils in the state.
