Operatives from the Special Tactical Squad of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja are in custody following their arrest for allegedly extorting N30 million from a citizen.
This development was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement released on Friday, February 23, 2024.
According to ACP Adejobi, the extortion came to light through a report on the X platform.
The police swiftly apprehended the officers and their accomplices, who had initially evaded capture during the early stages of the investigation.
The statement reads, “In response to the recent extortion incident involving officers of the Nigeria Police attached to the Special Tactical Squad in Abuja, who allegedly extorted a member of the public of N30.3 million, reported via the X platform, the Nigeria Police Force wishes to announce significant progress in apprehending the culprits.
The escaped squad members have been arrested and are currently in custody.
“The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered disciplinary proceedings to ensure swift and decisive justice.
This underscores the force’s zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct or corruption within its ranks.
The statement emphasizes the importance of holding accountable those who betray the public trust, as such actions tarnish the reputation of the force and undermine efforts to maintain law and order in the country.
