The Ministry of Power’s intention to approve the proposed increases in electricity tariff by Distribution companies has met with strong opposition from the Senate.
The Senate also opposed the plan to remove electricity subsidy in view of the current hardships in the country.
The Senate urged the government to abandon the idea of raising electricity tariff.
The upper chamber also instructed the committee on power to probe the N2tn needed for electricity subsidy payment, other debts in the sector, and the metering situation in the country.
The Senate’s resolution came after it deliberated and endorsed a motion by Senator Aminu Abbas (PDP, Adamawa Central) during plenary on the necessity to maintain subsidy on electricity in the country for the foreseeable future.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed at a press conference in Abuja last week that Nigeria was unlikely to continue the current electricity subsidy payment.
He stated that the country’s power sector owed over N3tn to electricity-generating companies (GenCos) and gas companies (GasCos).
