The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, who was detained by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), in charge of Zone 5, Benin City, Edo State, Mr. Arungwa Nwazule, on Wednesday evening has been freed.
The AIG had disclosed late Wednesday night that the LP National Chairman, the Edo State chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi and three others, were held for “conspiracy, brutal assault, attempted murder, armed robbery, grievous harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.”
Talking to some of his supporters who were at the AIG Zone 5 headquarters shortly after his freedom, Abure stated that what he endured is similar to what other freedom fighters endure all over the world.
He added that his freedom by the police was achieved by pressure put on the police from some quarters which he did not mention, adding that assurances were given that the state chairman, state publicity secretary and others detained alongside him would be freed in the early hours of Thursday.
Abure, who criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), for making life difficult for Nigerians revealed that since the February 2023 general elections, enemies of the LP had not stopped causing crises within the party, adding that several petitions based on baseless accusations had been written against him.
He assured that neither he, nor the party, would be discouraged from pursuing the goals of the party.
