On Wednesday, February 21, the Senate passed a resolution to urge the federal government to keep the electricity subsidy in place, considering the current economic hardship in the country.
The resolution was based on a motion that was presented and approved during the plenary session, which argued for the necessity of maintaining the subsidy on electricity for the time being.
The motion was initiated by a Senator from the Adamawa Central zone, Aminu Iya Abbas (PDP).
The federal government had stated last week that it was “very hard to continue subsidizing electricity.”
The Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu, who made this statement in Abuja, said Nigeria needed to adopt a more efficient tariff system.
He also disclosed that the country owed N1.3 trillion to electricity-generating companies and $ 1.3 billion to gas companies.
