The Department of State Services (DSS) has defended its actions, stating that it did not violate any laws in the re-arrest of the embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
In a statement released by Peter Afunay, the DSS spokesperson, on Wednesday, the agency accused certain elements of propagating a false narrative surrounding the incident involving Emefiele’s re-arrest.
“For clarity, the DSS asserts that it has adhered to all legal protocols in handling the Emefiele Case, despite attempts by some to distort the facts.
The Service has previously alerted the public to malicious schemes aimed at tarnishing its reputation. In fulfilling its responsibilities, the DSS remains committed to professionalism, ethical standards, and disciplined conduct,” the statement read in part.
“The DSS will not engage in pursuits for personal gain or glory, nor will it succumb to delusional heroism.
Instead, it will prioritize its national security mandate and calls on patriotic Nigerians to support its efforts in achieving the nation’s security objectives.
It is crucial to remember that we only have one country, Nigeria, and we must unite with love and tolerance to develop it,” Afunaya added.
The spokesperson emphasized that the actions of DSS officials did not reflect the professional standards of the agency and reiterated the agency’s respect for the judiciary’s authority, promising not to undermine it.
It is worth recalling the altercation between officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and the Department of State Services (DSS) over Emefiele’s custody after he was granted bail by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
