The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano Area Command, says it has seized four trucks of food items as part of efforts to curb smuggling.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Spokesman of the Service, Saidu Nuradeen, on Tuesday in Kano.
He said that the service seized the vehicles carrying a large amount of food items meant for illegal export along the Hadejia-Taura-Ringim route in Jigawa.
Nuradeen identified the items as 1,505 cartons of big and small-sized dried fish, 17 bags of local variety rice, and two bags of beans.
He said that the seizure demonstrates the relentless effort of the Service to implement the border closure policy aimed at protecting the nation’s economy and ensuring food security.
“Smuggling damages legitimate trade channels, threatens public health, and robs the government of much-needed revenue.
“The NCS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to fight smuggling activities across all entry points into the country.
While appealing to members of the public to provide reliable information to help it stop smuggling, Nuradeen restated commitments to prevent illicit activities to support local industries and enhance food security.
The Controller, Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Dauda Ibrahim Chana, urged border communities to collaborate with the Service and other security agencies to secure border posts.
He assured them that the service was committed to addressing their needs, especially in terms of community relations.
