The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has confirmed its quarter-finalists as of Tuesday.
Angola secured their position following a convincing victory over Namibia last Saturday. The Parancas Negras (Black Sable Antelopes) are now set to face the Super Eagles of Nigeria, one of the tournament’s favorites, who defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
Hosts Côte d’Ivoire caused an upset by eliminating defending champions Senegal in the Round of 16. Frank Kessie’s penalty ensured their survival until the penalty shoot-out, which they won in favor of the Elephants.
Cape Verde also advanced to the quarter-finals for the second time in their history, thanks to a late Ryan Mendes penalty that secured victory over Mauritania.
Guinea also shocked Equatorial Guinea with a dramatic injury-time winner, triumphing 1-0 on Sunday.
In the last-16 match at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium in Abidjan, Bayo, from French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, scored the decisive goal just as the game seemed headed for extra time, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Guinea team and their supporters.
It marked a historic moment for the Syli National, who had never before won a Cup of Nations knockout match — they were runners-up in 1976 when the final four played a round-robin format to determine the trophy winner.
Egypt, another favorite, was also eliminated from the tournament by DR Congo, who defeated them on penalties. South Africa upset 10-man Morocco to reach the last eight.
